BACK UP RING , Model Name/Number: BACK UP RING

  • (Customer Reviews)
Overview

In the world of high-pressure hydraulics, a backup seal (often called a backup ring or anti-extrusion ring) is the unsung hero that prevents your primary seal from failing under stress.

Think of it as the "bodyguard" for your O-ring. While it doesn't actually do the sealing itself, it ensures the primary seal stays exactly where it belongs.

In high-pressure hydraulic systems, a backup seal (more commonly known as a backup ring) is a rigid, ring-shaped component used to prevent a primary seal—typically an O-ring—from failing due to pressure-induced deformation.

While they are not intended to be "seals" in the sense of holding back fluid on their own, they are critical for extending the life of a system operating above 1,500 PSI (100 bar).

Material Key Characteristics
PTFE (Teflon) High heat resistance, low friction, and chemically inert. Very common.
Virgin PEEK Extremely hard; used for ultra-high pressure or steam applications.
Hard Elastomers 90 Shore A Nitrile or Polyurethane; used for high-impact or heavy-duty cycles.
Nylon High strength-to-weight ratio, but can absorb moisture and swell.

  • Single-Acting: One backup ring placed on the side of the O-ring opposite the pressure source.

Double-Acting: Two backup rings, one on each side of the O-ring. This protects the seal regardless of which direction the piston is moving.

  •

Orientation: If using a Scarf Cut ring, ensure the cut "points" away from the O-ring to prevent the O-ring material from getting pinched in the slit.
