BACK UP RING , Model Name/Number: BACK UP RING

  • (Customer Reviews)
Overview

In high-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems, a Teflon (PTFE) Back-up Ring is not actually a seal itself, but a functional "bodyguard" for an O-ring. Its primary job is to prevent extrusion—the process where high pressure forces a soft O-ring into the tiny clearance gap between metal parts, causing it to shred or "nibble" away.

They are typically used in conjunction with O-rings, where they prevent extrusion - the phenomenon where a seal deforms under high pressure and moves into the clearance gap, leading to seal damage and system failure.

Attribute

Specification / Detail

Material

Virgin PTFE (White) or Filled PTFE (e.g., Bronze, Glass, or Carbon filled for higher loads).

Orientation

Must be placed on the low-pressure side (downstream) of the O-ring.

Dynamic vs. Static

Used in both, but critical in dynamic (moving) applications to prevent friction-based tearing.

  • Extended Seal Life: Prevents the "nibbling" effect that causes 90% of high-pressure O-ring failures.

  • Wider Tolerances: Allows engineers to use slightly larger clearance gaps (which are cheaper to manufacture) without risking seal failure.

  • Pressure Compensation: Helps the O-ring maintain its circular cross-section, ensuring a more consistent seal.
