O RING , Model Name/Number: O RING

  • (Customer Reviews)
Overview

n O-ring is the most widely used seal in the world due to its simplicity, low cost, and effectiveness. It is a loop of elastomer with a round (O-shaped) cross-section, designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly to create a fluid-tight or air-tight seal.

The O-ring functions through mechanical deformation. When the O-ring is installed into a "gland" (the groove), it is slightly flattened.

  • Initial Seal: The physical "squeeze" provides the initial seal at low pressure.

  • Pressure-Activated Seal: As hydraulic or pneumatic pressure increases, it pushes the O-ring against the side of the groove, forcing it to deform further and seal even tighter against the surfaces.

Material

Common Name

Best For...

Nitrile (NBR)

Buna-N

Standard hydraulic oil, water, air. Most common.

Viton™ (FKM)

Fluorocarbon

High heat, chemicals, and fuels.

Silicone (VMQ)

Silicone

Food/Medical use, extreme cold/dry heat.

EPDM

Ethylene Propylene

Brake fluid, steam, and outdoor UV exposure.

  • Pressure Enhancement: A key feature is its ability to use the system's own pressure to seal better. As fluid pushes against the ring, the ring deforms further into the gap, increasing the contact surface area.

  • Bi-Directional Sealing: Unlike many specialized lip seals, a standard O-ring can seal pressure coming from either the left or the right side.

  • 70 Durometer (Standard): Offers the best balance of flexibility and sealing for most applications.
